Georg Philipp Telemann, whose 250th anniversary of death we commemorate this year, was not only one of the greatest composers of his times and beyond: “A Lulli is renowned; Corelli one may praise; but Telemann alone has above mere fame been raised” (Johann Mattheson, 1740). He was also a shrewd businessman, who established himself as a wealthy gentleman in the 18th century Hamburg society after moving there in 1721. One of his most successful business ideas was the launch of a subscription list for his latest compositions, including his 1733 Musique de Table. Members of the European Aristocracy as well as fellow musicians and composers signed these lists. Soon after publication copies of Telemann’s music were sent to numerous countries, cities and households, making their way to London, Leipzig, Paris, and into the hands of Georg Frederic Handel, Johann Sebastian Bach, Michel Blavet and many more. The programme will also feature freshly penned works by composers of today. These compositions for solo recorder will be based on and inspired by Telemann’s Twelve Fantasias for Solo Flute, his subscribers, their musical languages and Telemann’s own “goût réuni” (mixed taste).
