Telemann in Hildesheim
Where do you see the connection between Telemann and Hildesheim?
Georg Philipp Telemann was a student at the Gymnasium Andreanum in Hildesheim from 1697 until 1701. Under the direction of the director Johann Christoph Losius he coninued to promote his musical education. He learned to play the organ, violin, da gamba, flute, oboe, chalumeau, double bass and bass trombone, almost entirely by himself.
He composed vocal works for the school theater (musical setting of the „Singing Geography“ [„Singende Geographie“] by Johann Christoph Losius). The St. Godehardi Monastery and the Jesiut priest Crisps, who was the director responsible for the church music of the town, gave him more composing commissions for church services. Telemann was influenced by the music life of Hanover and Braunschweig, too. Here he got in touch with French and Italian instrumental music. The experiences he made here, should characterize much of his later works.
