Telemann in Paris

Where do you see the connection between Telemann and Paris?
France was always present in the music of Telemann and in his mind. Listening to his musical works, you will find a lot of allusions and references to French music and even to the history of France.
In 1737, Telemann travels to Paris, following repeatedly formulated requests from music circles in France. Originally only a short stay is planned, but this is extended to a total of eight months. At the time of Telemann's stay the dispute between the conservative "Lullists" and the modern "Ramists" is at its peak. With the rise of one of the greatest musical geniuses of the epoch, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Telemann also closely follows the lyrical and musical renewal of stage events in France.
Telemann, who is called "Tellement" by the press, lives in the heart of the Marais quarter with the greatest harpsichord player of the time: Antoine Vater.
He is given the opportunity to meet the most important instrumentalists and composers who have been members of the royal music academy "Académie Royale de Musique", "Théâtre de la Foire Saint-Germain" and "Concert Spirituel". His new French friends include Guignon, Blavet, Forqueray, Mondonville, Naudot, Bodin de Boismortier, Campra and Clérambault.
It is probable that he also met with Jean-Philippe Rameau in this circle, but there are no vouched proofs for this encounter.
More importantly, Telemann was composer during his stay in Paris and also received the royal privilege to publish at Ballard (the publisher of Lully and Rameau).
He composed numerous compositions and his works have been greeted with great enthusiasm.
"I also composed for the concert of the amateurs: two Latin psalms - two-parted and instrumental, accompanied by numerous concertos, a French cantata entitled Polyphème, a Buffo symphony after Père Barnabas; and I have put the score for six trio's into print."
In one of his most famous works, the "Paris Quartet", Telemann has perpetuated his strong bond with Paris.
And for Paris applies that Telemann is the only great composer who has come from Germany to compose for the city of Lully and Rameau.
