What connects Telemann with Żary?
G. P. Telemann was chapel master at the court of Erdmann II. of Promnitz in Żary (Sorau).
He lived and worked in Żary from 1704-1708, with breaks for traveling with his mediatized prince as well as on his own. Telemann also stayed in their second residence in Pszczyna (Pless) along with the court of Promnitz.

In 1709, Telemann marries Miss Amalie Louise Juliane Eberlin, maid of honor of Erdmann Promnitz’s wife. The ceremony takes place in the castle chapel in Żary on 13. October 1709, from this marriage comes their daughter Marie Wilhelmine. In Żary Telemann meets Erdmann Neumeister, a theologian, poet and friend who writes numerous lyrics for Telemann’s cantatas. Neumeister hold the position of the superintendent at that time. Both then worked together in Hamburg for a few decades. During his stay in Żary Telemann listend to Polish, Sorbian and Haná folk music, which he then used in his works. In Żary he also met Caspar Printz, he predecessor as chapel master, who was a respected musicologist.
