How does the active examination with Telemann’s life and work look like in Frankfurt am Main?
In Frankfurt am Main you find the world’s largest Telemann cantatas collection with about 800 works (University Library Johann Christian Senckenberg Frankfurt. About a quarter of the compositions is not known in other libraries or anthologies. The Frankfurt Telemann Society has made the sighting and development of the extensive material their business, it promotes concerts and music services as well as editions of selected works, e.g. it is currently being worked on a complete critical edition of the last Frankfurt cantata volume.
In cooperation with the Institute for Musicology at the Goethe University and in collaboration with historians, theologians and ‘Germanists’ the activity of Telemann in Frankfurt and its after-effects on the musical life of the city are examined. For a broad audience this is mainly visible through issue-specific conferences (1996: Telemann in Frankfurt/Main, 2001: Telemann’s Vocal Music – Music as the sound speech of the Enlightenment, 2011: Telemann’s Funeral Music. Aesthetic, Religious and Social Aspects).
