Irrespective of Telemann, what should visitors not miss when visiting Hamburg?
The harbor, the river Alster, the Jungfernstieg, the Reeperbahn, the clubs, the churches, the art hall – you should not miss anything of it. The ones who are especially interested in music must not miss the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. Right on the waterfront, at Baumwall, was the tree house in the 18th century. Among its attractions were cod dishes, a „stuffed Greenlander in his canoe” and Telemann’s music.
The tree house is history, but in close proximity of its former site the Elbphilarmonie Concert Hall raised direct on the river Elbe. It is one of the world’s most modern and spectacular concert halls. Hamburg’s historic Town Hall in neo-renaissance style is also worth seeing. A plaque near the main entrance recalls that Hamburg’s „director musices” Georg Philipp Telemann was buried here, when the terrain was not yet the lively and representative center of the city but the silent cemetery of the St.-Johannis monastery.
